An indoor adventure park that has been taking shape in Charlottesville for months is finally approaching its grand debut. Coco’s Adventure Factory, housed in the former Big Lots building on Hillsdale Drive, is transforming what was once a discount retail space into a sprawling hub of family entertainment. The facility will feature basketball courts, competitive rock climbing walls, multi-level slides, bumper carts, and a separate play area designed specifically for toddlers.
Daniel Halpert, the founder behind the project, said the journey to completion has been far more grueling than he ever imagined. “We’ve made a lot of progress. It’s a lot of work, a lot more than I ever thought it would be,” Halpern said. “Most difficult thing I’ve ever done in my life, but it’s very rewarding.” Halpert believes that once visitors step inside, they will be struck by the sheer scale of the space. “To me it feels like you’re coming into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory,” he remarked.
The idea for Coco’s Adventure Factory came directly from Halpert’s personal life. As a father of 10-year-old twins, he found himself regularly shuttling his children to different entertainment venues, watching the costs pile up. That experience sparked a vision: a single destination where families could enjoy multiple activities at a reasonable price. He hopes that model will resonate with parents facing similar challenges.
Although the original target was to open earlier this year, the process has stretched longer than expected. Halpert emphasized that the extra time has been necessary to ensure the facility is fully ready and safe for the public. The building has already cleared the majority of its required inspections. A few minor items required additional work, which Halpert said has since been addressed. A final revised inspection is scheduled for this week. “Then that should be it,” Halpert said. “Then we should be good to go.”
