LINCOLN, Neb. – The discovery of a rabid bat in Cherry County last Thursday has heightened public awareness of bat activity, but wildlife specialists say the situation is far from alarming. In fact, the rise in sightings reflects seasonal behavior rather than a population boom. Tony Skova, who has spent 16 years removing bats from homes across Nebraska, notes that the months of June and July are the peak birthing period for bats. “I haven’t seen an increase or decrease. It’s a normal year for me,” he said. Skova explained that mother bats are more visible as they search for roosting sites to raise their single offspring, sometimes twins, and that their presence in human structures often results from unsealed crevices. “We need the bats. Bats kill, eat 1,000 to 5,000 mosquitoes every single night. Without them, we would be in trouble,” he added. His work involves sealing entry points and safely relocating colonies, a task he insists should be left to professionals. Shaun Dunn, a zoologist at Nebraska Game and Parks, offers a broader perspective. He points to a nationwide decline in bat populations driven by White Nose Syndrome, a fungal outbreak that originated in New York. While Nebraska has not yet experienced severe outbreaks, the disease remains a threat. “There has actually been a decrease in bat populations nationwide,” Dunn said. He described the recent rabies case in Cherry County as statistically normal, with Nebraska logging a total of 20 rabies cases in bats for 2026. Dunn stressed that losing bats would be a real travesty. “They eat a lot of different insects and keeping those insect populations in check not only helps prevent the spread of diseases, but also helps out farmers maintain their crops. Then, they don’t have to use as many pesticides on them. That saves them money,” he explained. He also addressed public fear: “A lot of people will get kind of upset or even scared when they see a bat, but most of the time the bat’s just trying to find a home place to hibernate, to roost for the night. They’re not trying to impact humans in any way.” Dunn noted that only 1% to 3% of bats carry rabies, and that direct contact with humans is rare. For homeowners who suspect bats have taken up residence in attics or walls, both experts strongly recommend hiring licensed removal specialists. The combination of seasonal visibility, ecological importance, and the low risk of disease suggests that Nebraskans can coexist with the flying mammals without undue worry.
