Ben Bishop, the head pro at The Picklr's Bozeman location, knows the addictive pull of the sport firsthand. He discovered pickleball about three years ago on the very same courts where he now teaches. “I got whooped by a bunch of 80-year-olds,” Bishop recalled with a laugh. “From there I was kind of addicted.” That initial defeat sparked a passion that led him to compete in tournaments and eventually become a leader in the local pickleball community. Yet Aimesbury acknowledged that the learning curve can be steep. “But it's a daunting sport to get into,” he noted. “There's a lot of weird rules and different things about it that I think we can help people learn.”

To bridge that gap, The Picklr partnered with the city of Bozeman to reserve four courts at Bogert Park every Tuesday at 11 a.m. for free lessons. The sessions are open to all skill levels—beginners, intermediates, and advanced players alike. “We'll be here every single Tuesday just giving out free lessons to beginners, advanced, intermediate—whoever you are,” Bishop said. The response has been encouraging: twenty people have already signed up for the next session.

For Bishop, the reward goes beyond the court. “It's really fun to watch my students go and compete in tournaments,” he said, reflecting on the satisfaction of seeing learners progress. While tournament play may be a distant goal for some, the free lessons are already fostering a community of enthusiasts. The Picklr opened its Bozeman location about a year ago, and the local scene has grown rapidly since. With consistent weekly offerings and a welcoming atmosphere, the franchise is helping to fuel the sport's momentum in the Gallatin Valley.
