A 40-year-old man from Lilongwe will spend the next 21 years in prison with hard labour after being convicted of defiling three young girls, including his own granddaughters. The Senior Resident Magistrate's Court handed down the sentence on July 27, 2026, following a case that shocked the local community.
The convict, Kupata Chikanga, faced three counts of defilement involving girls aged 14, 10, and 14. The crimes occurred between May and June 2026, each time at his home. Deputy Police Spokesperson for Lilongwe, Khumbo Sanyiwa, confirmed the details and identified the perpetrator.
Court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of manipulation. Chikanga, who is the grandfather of the victims, enticed the girls by giving them 500 Malawian Kwacha each whenever they visited his house. The abuse came to light in June 2026 when the parents of one 14-year-old were told their daughter had been seen at Chikanga's home around 7 p.m. Initially, the girl claimed she had gone there to eat rice. But under further questioning, she disclosed that Chikanga had been sexually abusing her. She also revealed that two other girls had suffered the same fate.
The family immediately reported the matter to Lilongwe Police, leading to Chikanga's arrest. During investigations, authorities discovered that one of the victims was already one month pregnant.
When brought before the court, Chikanga pleaded guilty to all three counts. In his mitigation plea, he asked for leniency, stating that he was a first-time offender. However, State Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Kandeya of Lilongwe Police urged the court to impose a stiff custodial sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of the offences and the urgent need to protect children from sexual abuse.
Passing the sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Gracious Kondowe highlighted that the victims were minors and therefore legally incapable of giving consent to sexual intercourse. He further noted that the offences had inflicted lasting physical and psychological harm on the victims. The court sentenced Chikanga to 21 years' imprisonment with hard labour.
Chikanga comes from Kanong'ona Village, under Traditional Authority Mbwatalika in Lilongwe District.
