ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Milwaukee Brewers rode a explosive fifth inning and a rock-solid start from left-hander Shane Drohan to a 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night, extending their recent surge and deepening the Angels’ spiral.

Drohan, improving to 6-4 on the season, delivered his fifth consecutive outing of at least six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while fanning seven. The 26-year-old has been a stabilizing force for a Brewers rotation that leads the National League Central. His command was sharp from the outset, mixing a lively fastball with a biting changeup to keep Angels hitters off balance.

The game remained scoreless until the second inning, when Milwaukee struck first. Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell led off with singles, and after a strikeout, No. 9 hitter Cooper Pratt looped a two-out RBI single into shallow left field, scoring Bauers and giving the Brewers a 1-0 lead.

That margin held until the fifth, when the Brewers broke the game open. Pratt led off with a walk, bringing up Brice Turang, the leadoff man who has been one of the most productive second basemen in baseball this season. Turang, who leads all major league second basemen in OPS (.834), doubles (25), RBIs (68), runs (71), and walks (61), crushed an inside cutter from Angels starter Ryan Johnson 398 feet over the left-center field wall. The two-run homer, his 16th of the year, made it 3-0.

Johnson’s night ended after that. Jackson Chourio singled, William Contreras walked, and Angels manager Ron Washington turned to right-hander Jose Fermin. Bauers greeted Fermin by obliterating a 1-0 pitch, sending it 424 feet into the right-field seats at 110 mph off the bat. The three-run blast put the Brewers up 6-0, effectively sealing the game.

The Angels showed life in the bottom of the fifth. Vaughn Grissom singled, and Denzer Guzman drove a 1-1 fastball from Drohan to the opposite field, clearing the right-center wall for a two-run homer, his fifth of the season. That cut the deficit to 6-2, but Drohan settled down and retired the final four batters he faced.

Milwaukee’s bullpen took over from there. Grant Anderson worked a clean seventh and recorded the first out of the eighth. Abner Uribe retired the next two hitters, and closer Trevor Megill handled the ninth in order, striking out one to seal the victory.

Ryan Johnson (2-6) took the loss for the Angels, allowing five runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. The Angels have now lost four straight, seven of their last eight, and 19 of their last 24, a stretch that has buried them near the bottom of the AL West.

Saturday’s matchup features Brewers left-hander Robert Gasser (3-4, 4.71 ERA) against Angels right-hander Jose Soriano (9-6, 3.29 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. PT at Angel Stadium.
