Linebacker Daymion Sanford was on the practice field Wednesday, less than four months after undergoing surgery for an undisclosed injury. His presence energized the defense, though he was limited in drills. Defensive tackle DJ Hicks, a veteran leader, spoke about the emotions of returning to the field. “It’s definitely jitters. You know, coming into something that you really care about, you always want to be a little nervous,” Hicks said. “I feel like it was a little bit of jitters, a little bit of everything, but that first play — once you get that first play done — it just turns into playing football again.”

Running back Rueben Owens, who missed most of last season due to injury, is back and confident in the offensive line. “They all stand out in their own way. Everyone is — them guys, I feel like they’re going to be really good this year,” Owens said. “After what I’ve seen today, I feel like I have some runs that can go for some. So, feel good about this offensive line.” Owens, a former five-star recruit, is expected to be a key contributor in the backfield alongside Reed.

The Aggies’ schedule is set to ramp up quickly. Practice number two is scheduled for Thursday evening, with Friday as the first off day of camp. The team will then have a scrimmage on Saturday. Kyle Field, which underwent minor renovations during the offseason, is set to host its first game of the season in approximately one month. The opponent has not yet been announced, but the Aggies are expected to open against a non-conference foe before diving into SEC play.
