CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – The Chicago Cubs delivered a commanding offensive performance on Sunday, mashing the Kansas City Royals 10-2 at Wrigley Field. Ian Happ and Miguel Amaya each launched home runs, while Matthew Boyd continued his stellar season on the mound, improving to 8-1.

Happ’s two-run shot in the sixth inning was his 20th of the year, widening the Cubs’ lead to 7-2. Amaya followed with a three-run blast in the seventh off reliever Easton McGee, putting the game well out of reach. The Cubs’ lineup was relentless, racking up 18 hits against Royals pitching. Alex Bregman, Happ, and Michael Busch all recorded three hits apiece, with Bregman delivering a pair of RBI singles that kept the pressure on Kansas City.

The Cubs seized control early. In the first inning, Michael Conforto lifted a sacrifice fly to score Michael Busch, who had led off with a walk. Two innings later, Conforto singled to bring Busch home again, and Nico Hoerner followed with an RBI single that scored Happ, pushing the lead to 3-0. In the fourth, Bregman added an RBI single to plate Pete Crow-Armstrong, making it 4-0.

The Royals finally answered in the bottom of the fourth. Starling Marte crushed his second home run of the season, a two-run shot that also scored Salvador Perez, cutting the deficit to 4-2. But that was as close as Kansas City would get. In the sixth, Bregman struck again with another RBI single, and Happ followed with his homer, effectively ending any comeback hopes.

Matthew Boyd turned in another quality start, allowing two runs and five hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked one, keeping the Royals off balance throughout. The left-hander has now won eight of his nine decisions this season, cementing his role as a reliable arm in the Cubs’ rotation.

Royals starter Randy Dobnak (2-1) struggled to contain Chicago’s offense. He allowed four runs on ten hits in five innings, with one walk and four strikeouts. The bullpen fared no better, as Easton McGee surrendered three runs in relief.

With the win, the Cubs took two of three games in the series. They will travel to Washington on Tuesday, where left-hander Shota Imanaga (8-9, 3.60 ERA) takes the mound. The Royals, meanwhile, head to Los Angeles for a Monday matchup against the Dodgers, sending lefty Noah Cameron (6-8, 4.37 ERA) to face left-hander Tarik Skubal (7-6, 2.81 ERA).

Sunday’s victory was a showcase of the Cubs’ depth and power, with contributions up and down the lineup. The 18-hit attack tied a season high for Chicago, and the performance from Boyd provided a steady anchor. As the Cubs push toward the postseason, games like this one highlight their potential to compete with any team in the league.
