Nikki Cross has always been a fan of superheroes. Growing up, she adored the X-Men and even named her original ring persona, Nikki Storm, after the mutant character. So when she found herself at a creative crossroads in WWE in 2021, she turned to that lifelong passion for inspiration. The result was Nikki A.S.H.—Nikki Almost a Super Hero—a character that would lead her to the Raw Women's Championship.

In a recent appearance on "Insight with Chris Van Vliet," Cross detailed the collaborative process behind the gimmick, which she developed alongside Vince McMahon. The idea came to her after her tag team partner, Alexa Bliss, became entangled with Bray Wyatt's supernatural storylines. "I was like, alright, I need something," Cross recalled. She had always admired past superhero characters like Hurricane Helms and Mighty Molly, and noted that despite the dominance of superhero movies in pop culture, WWE had not featured a similar character in years.

Cross prepared a detailed presentation on the concept, emphasizing the commercial potential of a superhero gimmick. "I just basically gave it to Vince and was like: 'Here, I've got an idea, this will make you money!'" she said. After a few weeks of silence, McMahon texted her, calling the idea "genius" and instructing creative to get started. However, McMahon had a specific vision that differed from Cross's original plan.

Cross initially imagined a character akin to Captain Marvel—intricate gear and a blockbuster aesthetic. McMahon, however, wanted a more grounded approach. He suggested the "Almost a Superhero" angle, making the character relatable. "He wanted it to be Nikki Almost a Superhero because almost is like, she's not quite a superhero, she's a superhero in training but not what you've seen before," Cross explained. McMahon also emphasized that the gear should look homemade, similar to Spider-Man's early costume, so that young fans could easily recreate it. "She knows that she doesn't have super powers, but her mindset is that she's a superhero and can take on the world, and that's how I approached it," Cross said. The character resonated with audiences, and Cross held the Raw Women's Championship for nearly two months in 2021.

Cross’s recollection offers a rare glimpse into the creative dynamics between a performer and WWE's top decision-maker. Her story underscores how a gimmick can evolve through collaboration, blending a wrestler's passion with the corporate vision of relatability and marketability. The Nikki A.S.H. character may have been short-lived, but its creation process remains a fascinating case study in professional wrestling character development.
