A 23-year-old man is fighting for his life after being shot multiple times in the Near West Side on Tuesday afternoon, marking another violent episode in a neighborhood grappling with a surge in gun crime.

Chicago police said the victim was standing near an alley in the 600 block of West Roosevelt Road around 3:58 p.m. when a lone assailant approached and fired several rounds. The man was struck once in the chest and twice in the leg, injuries that paramedics described as life-threatening. He was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Investigators have not yet identified a suspect or motive. No one is in custody, and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the attack or has surveillance footage to come forward. The area, a mix of residential buildings and small businesses, is known for its proximity to the University of Illinois at Chicago campus, but it has also been a hotspot for street-level violence.

Tuesday’s shooting is the latest in a string of similar incidents on the Near West Side. Earlier this month, a man was critically wounded in a separate shooting just blocks away. Police data shows that the district has seen a 15% increase in shootings compared to the same period last year, with many occurring in broad daylight.

Community activists have long called for more resources and intervention programs to address the root causes of the violence. "We are losing young men to senseless gunfire, and it has to stop," said a local pastor who requested anonymity due to safety concerns. "We need more than just police presence—we need jobs, mental health support, and opportunities for these kids."

The victim’s family has not yet released a statement. Meanwhile, detectives are reviewing security footage from nearby businesses and interviewing residents in the hope of generating leads. The Chicago Police Department’s Area Three detectives are leading the investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact CPD’s anonymous tip line. The shooting remains under investigation.
