Willowbrook's football team has enjoyed plenty of success under head coach Nick Hildreth over the years, but the first week of the season has often been a stumbling block. That changed Friday night in dramatic fashion. The Warriors snapped a six-year opening-day losing streak with a 20-13 overtime victory against crosstown rival Glenbard East, a win that came after a lightning delay and a tense fourth-quarter comeback by the Rams.

For senior running back Dionel Rocha, the moment was especially sweet. His three-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-goal in the extra session proved to be the game-winner. After the Rams' overtime possession ended with a fumbled snap, the Warriors celebrated their first Week 1 victory since 2018.

"I was really excited when I saw the play call," Rocha said. "I was ready for this moment. I've had my ups and downs with football โ€” I thought about quitting. But I came back and I've worked hard. I have to give it everything I've got for these guys. This is my home."

The win carried extra weight because it came against a Glenbard East program that had reached the playoffs seven consecutive seasons (excluding the pandemic year) and finished 9-2 in 2023. The Rams had won the previous two meetings, but Willowbrook's defense stepped up when it mattered most.

The game's early stages saw Rocha open the scoring with an 11-yard run in the first quarter. Glenbard East responded with two field goals from Moises Velazquez, cutting the lead to 7-6 at halftime. In the third quarter, Willowbrook extended its advantage when Jackson Dyers scored on a 17-yard reverse, making it 13-6.

The Rams appeared to be running out of time when lightning was spotted with five minutes remaining and the ball at their own 41-yard line. After a 30-minute delay, Glenbard East came out firing. Senior running back Montii Perry carried the ball 10 times on the ensuing drive, the last of which was a two-yard touchdown run to tie the score with 28 seconds left in regulation. Perry finished the night with 134 yards on 17 carries, while Malachi Miller added eight receptions for 61 yards.

"We showed some resolve going down the field and found a way to get this thing tied and into overtime," said Glenbard East coach John Walters. "We were just not clean in overtime โ€” we put the ball on the ground twice. Montii is a really good football player. But overall, we just have to play better and be more consistent, and we need to eliminate the penalties too."

For Willowbrook, the overtime heroics were set up by a defense that held firm after the Rams' surge. In the extra period, Rocha's touchdown gave the Warriors a 20-13 lead, and when Glenbard East's final snap went awry, the celebration began.

Hildreth, who has now won only four Week 1 games in his 16-year tenure, acknowledged the imperfections but focused on the positives. "It was not pretty and we have a ton of stuff to clean up," he said. "But it was a typical week one game. Anytime you've got a new group, you have to build confidence and get to learn what you have to shore up while still winning the game. That's a good thing. Give our guys credit for hanging in there, even though this is not how you'd probably draw it up."

The Warriors' offensive standouts included JJ Miulli, who hauled in two catches for 97 yards, providing a deep threat that kept the Rams' defense honest. The combination of Rocha's running and Miulli's big plays gave Willowbrook a balanced attack that eventually wore down Glenbard East.

This victory not only ends a frustrating pattern for Willowbrook but also sets a positive tone for the rest of the season. With a challenging schedule ahead, the Warriors will need to build on this gritty performance, but for one night, they could savor breaking the curse.
