OXNARD, Calif. — The joint practice between the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday was as much about the fights as the football. The most memorable image might have been center Erik McCoy mimicking the infamous Kyle Turley helmet toss, launching a Cowboys helmet 15 yards downfield during a scuffle. Or perhaps it was undrafted rookie receiver Brock Rechsteiner, whose WWE background became evident when he first had his fingers pried from a Dallas defensive back's face mask, then turned around to body-slam a different defender. The term "chippy" barely captures the intensity of a session that saw multiple melees and shouting matches.

"There's some edginess to football, and we can learn from how this one navigated," said Saints head coach Kellen Moore.

When the fighting subsided, the Saints offense and Cowboys defense delivered compelling football, especially when quarterback Tyler Shough targeted wide receiver Chris Olave. Shough threw to Olave eight times, completing seven (or eight, depending on a disputed catch where Olave plucked the ball off rookie Caleb Downs' helmet and cradled it between his legs). Their connection was seamless: a deep comeback route, a play-action hookup, and a goal-line touchdown where Shough fired just as Olave beat the No. 10 pick to the middle of the field.

"Just continuing to grow the trust there," Shough said. "We're going to keep building. We're on the same page on a lot of stuff. We may have some hiccups here and there, but it's a lot of fun when we're out there and knowing what each other is thinking."

Shough finished 18 of 23 (or 19 of 23) with one interception, a misread of a Dallas zone. His second-to-last throw was a perfectly placed touchdown to tight end Noah Fant in the back of the end zone. After a slow start to camp, Shough is showing the form that made him a rookie of the year contender last season.

Attendance and injuries: Running back Alvin Kamara (knee) and defensive back Quincy Riley (groin) left early. Receiver Ronnie Bell exited due to overheating. Missing were receiver Jordyn Tyson (hamstring), running back Audric Estime (ankle), defensive back Rejzohn Wright (hip/ankle), linebacker Chris Rumph (ankle), and defensive linemen Cam Jordan (hamstring), Davon Godchaux (ankle), and Christen Miller (shoulder). Devaughn Vele was present but rested. Running backs Kendre Miller (back) and Devin Neal (hamstring) returned to practice.

Pass protection was sharper than in last week's joint practice against Jacksonville, with the offensive line creating cutback lanes for Travis Etienne, Neal, and Miller. Miller, returning from a back injury, had several impressive runs with the first team. Rookie wideout Bryce Lance caught three of four targets, including a deep double move. Kickers Charlie Smyth and Tanner Brown both went 4-for-5, with Brown missing wide right from 39 yards and Smyth from 45.
