The 26th Annual Joliet Township Girls Golf Invitational delivered a day of historic performances at Wedgewood. Oswego Co-op's Alli Wiertel, the reigning Class 2A state champion, etched her name into the record books with a sizzling 7-under-par 64, the lowest round ever recorded by a woman on the course. The junior, who committed to the University of Alabama last month, navigated 17 holes without a single bogey before a slip on her final hole. "It happened on what should have been my last putt of the day," Wiertel said. "I was really trying to go bogey-free. I've had some bogey-free rounds before, and I was real close today. I just try to go out and make as many birdies as I can so that I have some cushion if I make a bogey. I had no idea that I was close to the course record." She credited her teammates for making the day enjoyable. "The rest of our team did a real good job today, too. It was a fun day. I look at high school golf as my fun time. During the summer, I am out there playing by myself, but in the high school season, I get to go out there with my friends and it's a lot different. I give them tips if they ask me or I will set up drills for them. It's a lot of fun." Wiertel's brilliance highlighted a deep field: Crystal Lake Central sophomore Giuliana Dickson fired a 68, and Plainfield East junior Taylor Miller carded a 70. Plainfield North freshman Chloe Lee came agonizingly close to joining them under par, finishing with an even-par 71. "I missed a one-footer," Lee said. "If I didn't miss that one, I would have been under par today." Lee's round helped propel the Tigers to a team score of 314, edging Lincoln-Way Central by two strokes for the tournament title. It marked the first 18-hole team championship in coach Matt Meindl's six-year tenure. "This was a big day for us," Meindl said. "We got out to a hot start early, but we fell back a little bit and Lincoln-Way Central caught up. I am not the type of coach that gets upset, so I told the girls that as long as they are giving their all up until the last putt, I am happy. They are receptive to that, and they picked things up down the stretch and got the win. I couldn't be happier with this group." Senior Kiley Sanborn placed sixth with a 72, while senior Annie Halvorsen (13th, 80) and junior Alesia Haynes (44th, 81) rounded out the scoring four. Oswego Co-op took third at 327, followed by Crystal Lake Central (331) and Plainfield East (333). Lincoln-Way Central's effort was led by sophomore Ava Blum (10th, 76), sophomore Charlotte Majewski (11th, 79), senior Taylor Bush (12th, 80), and junior Grace Chandler (15th, 81). Plainfield East's top scorers included Miller, senior Hope Trosclair (17th, 83), senior Kendall Battle (22nd, 85), and senior Kailey Cudal (73rd, 95). Lockport finished eighth (348) behind junior Natalie Mickelson's ninth-place 76. Minooka (360) placed 10th, led by Avery Selk (22nd, 85). Lemont (362) was 11th, with Sarah Scott (75) taking seventh. Joliet Township (370) finished 13th, paced by Breanna Burko (42nd, 90). Seneca (376) took 18th behind Piper Stenzel (32nd, 88). Plainfield Central (403) was 21st, led by Kaylee Adelmann (19th, 84), and Joliet Catholic (474) finished 22nd, with Jennie Lenard (108th, 104) as the top scorer. Plainfield South, without a full team, was represented by Grace Brown (107th, 103). The day at Wedgewood showcased both individual brilliance and team depth, setting a high bar for the rest of the season.
