COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Saturday morning marked a milestone for A&M Consolidated’s cross country program as it hosted the first-ever Coach Giese Cross Country Meet, an event created to honor a man who shaped the Tigers into a state powerhouse. Fourteen schools from across the region gathered on the campus for a day of competition that blended athletic excellence with heartfelt tribute.

The meet bears the name of James Giese, who spent 31 years guiding the Tigers’ cross country and track teams. Under his leadership, the program captured 11 state championships, building a legacy of discipline and success. The current head coach, Anthony Branch, spearheaded the idea of naming the meet after Giese as a way to ensure his contributions are never forgotten.

“I want the people in this community to remember him,” Branch said. “He’s made A&M Consolidated one of the top cross-country programs in the state, and so just to be able to give him this honor and give him something back, to me, it just makes me smile.”

Giese attended the event, visibly moved by the recognition. He watched from the sidelines as runners from junior varsity and varsity divisions competed in 2-mile races, split into big and small school classifications. “I really appreciate it,” Giese said. “It was just a great time from 1971 to 2003. It was a great time, great coaches. We raised our kiddos here, so you can’t ask anything better.”

On the course, the home team delivered strong performances. In the girls’ big school varsity race, Rowan Skinner crossed the finish line first, leading the Consol charge. The boys’ big school varsity event saw Micah Gentry claim the top spot, giving the Tigers a clean sweep of the headline divisions.

The meet’s format allowed for broad participation, with separate races for junior varsity and varsity athletes in both classification groups. The event not only provided a competitive platform but also served as a living tribute to a coach whose influence extends far beyond the track.

As the morning sun warmed the course, the atmosphere blended the energy of a traditional meet with the warmth of a community reunion. Coaches, athletes, and families shared stories of Giese’s impact, creating a sense of continuity between past and present. The inaugural Coach Giese Cross Country Meet is now set to become an annual tradition, ensuring that Giese’s name remains synonymous with excellence in Consol cross country.
