Kansas City, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals showcased their offensive depth on Monday night, powered by Bobby Witt Jr.’s electrifying performance. Witt homered, doubled, and scored four runs, leading the Royals to a 9-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics at Kauffman Stadium. The win keeps the Royals in the thick of the playoff race, while the Athletics continue to struggle.

The game began with a surprise as the Athletics’ Jeff McNeil launched the first pitch of the contest over the fence, giving Oakland an early 1-0 lead. But the Royals responded swiftly in the bottom of the first. Maikel Garcia singled to drive in a run, and Salvador Perez followed with a two-run single, putting Kansas City ahead 3-1. The momentum shifted entirely in the Royals’ favor when Witt stepped to the plate in the third inning. He crushed a two-run homer—his 15th of the year—estimated at 390 feet to left-center field, extending the lead to 5-1.

Witt wasn’t finished. In the eighth inning, he added an RBI double, capping his four-run night. Jac Caglinone contributed two RBI singles, one in the sixth and another in the eighth, pushing the Royals’ lead to 9-4. Kyle Isbel also drove in a run with a single in the third.

On the mound, Michael Wacha (6-8) battled through five innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs while striking out three. Despite some early trouble, Wacha managed to keep the A’s from building momentum. Steven Cruz earned his fourth save of the season, stepping in after Lucas Erceg failed to record an out and loaded the bases in the ninth. Cruz shut the door, preserving the victory.

The Athletics showed fight in the middle innings. Tommy White belted a solo home run—a 401-foot shot to left-center—in the fifth inning. Brian Serven followed with a two-run homer that cut the deficit to 6-4. But the Royals’ bullpen held firm, and the A’s couldn’t close the gap further.

Oakland starter Mason Barnett (1-3) lasted only 2 2/3 innings, surrendering seven hits and six earned runs. He walked four and struck out two, struggling with command throughout his outing.

The two teams will meet again Tuesday night, with the Athletics sending right-hander Jack Perkins (2-9, 7.27 ERA) to the mound. The Royals will counter with left-hander Daniel Lynch IV (4-4, 2.88).
