The rugged beauty of the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe became the scene of a brief but perilous police chase early Thursday morning, ending with a smashed Tesla and an arrest on the suspect's birthday. The California Highway Patrol's South Lake Tahoe office confirmed that Anthony James Levon Jr., 26, of Antioch, was taken into custody after the gold Tesla truck he was driving crashed into a tree off State Route 89, just south of Inspiration Point in unincorporated El Dorado County.

It was just after 1:52 a.m. on August 20 when the trouble began. Traffic control operators working with Caltrans construction crews spotted a Tesla truck speeding through two active closures north of Emerald Bay—a dangerous move that immediately triggered an alert. Officer Heitzman of the CHP was dispatched to intercept. She located the vehicle at the north end of the closure and pulled it over. But as she stepped out of her patrol car, the driver floored the accelerator, ran a red light, and fled southbound on SR-89.

Heitzman activated her lights and siren and gave chase. The pursuit, however, was short-lived. The Tesla entered the first switchback on the winding mountain road, a tight curve that demands careful handling. The driver lost control, the vehicle skidded off the pavement, and it slammed into a tree with enough force to stop the chase cold.

Emergency responders arrived quickly. Levon was extricated from the mangled truck and transported to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe for a mandatory medical evaluation. Authorities did not release details on the extent of his injuries, but noted that he was stable enough to be booked into jail later that day. He now faces a charge of evading a peace officer, a felony under California law.

A CHP news release highlighted the irony of the timing: the arrest occurred on Levon's 26th birthday. What might have been a day of celebration turned into a morning of handcuffs and hospital visits. The gold Tesla truck, a vehicle known for its electric performance and high-tech safety features, proved no match for the laws of physics on a tight mountain curve at high speed.

The incident also raised questions about the risks posed by such pursuits in areas with heavy recreational traffic and winding roads. The stretch of SR-89 near Inspiration Point is a popular route for tourists heading to Emerald Bay and other landmarks, but it is also a zone where construction crews frequently work on road improvements. CHP officers undergo regular training on when to initiate and terminate pursuits, particularly in hazardous conditions.

No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the crash, and the construction zone was empty at the time. The CHP is continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to Levon's decision to flee, including whether alcohol or drugs played a role. For now, the driver remains in custody, and the Tesla truck sits in a tow yard as a silent reminder of a birthday morning gone terribly wrong.
