The 2026 NSAA softball season is officially underway, and opening day delivered a compelling mix of dominance, comebacks, and surprises. The action began with a correction: earlier reports had Centura losing to Fillmore Central, but the actual result was Centura winning 8-4. That game set the tone for a day where several teams made emphatic statements.

At Kearney's softball complex, Lincoln Southwest proved their mettle in a doubleheader against the Bearcats. The first game was a complete shutout, with Lincoln Southwest rolling to a 10-0 victory. Game two started with Kearney trailing 2-0 in the second inning, but a spark came from Zia Shafer, who ripped a shot to left field that drove in Kennedy Lee, narrowing the gap. However, Lincoln Southwest responded emphatically in the bottom of the second. Brenly Trautman reached first safely, allowing Tesni Lashley to score. Then Harper Svendsen popped out to right center field, but the play brought Leyton Murphy home. The inning exploded for six runs, and Lincoln Southwest never looked back, winning the second game 14-3 to complete the sweep.

Across town at Veterans Softball Complex, a low cloud ceiling and damp air didn't dampen Standing Bear's firepower. In the first inning, Ryan Dailey smashed a triple that cleared the bases, putting the Grizzlies ahead 4-0. Later in the same frame, Hadley Froeschl chopped a ball into left field for another RBI, and the rout was on. Standing Bear finished with a 15-0 victory over Grand Island, showcasing a relentless offense and sharp pitching.

Class B action brought its own drama. Adams Central hosted Gering in a tightly contested game. After two innings, the score was knotted at 1-1. Macie Deines recorded a strikeout for Adams Central, while Brodee Luce racked up two strikeouts for Gering, keeping the scoreboard frozen heading into the third. Then Gering's Emma Wilson launched a home run, putting the Bulldogs in front. But Adams Central clawed back, eventually winning 5-4 in a comeback that showed their resilience.

At Smith Softball Complex, North Platte squared off against Adams Central and then Gering. North Platte defeated Adams Central, while Gering turned around and beat North Platte, creating a triangle of competitive results.

Other scores from around the state included York's dominant 18-0 shutout of Fillmore Central, Centura's two wins (8-4 over Fillmore Central and 8-4 over York), Kearney Catholic's 15-0 victory over Ord, O'Neill's 7-4 win against St. Paul, and McCook's 17-1 thrashing of Gothenburg.

The opening day of NSAA softball provided a clear message: parity may be limited in some classes, but the passion and intensity are already at full throttle. Teams like Lincoln Southwest and Standing Bear look like early contenders, while Gering and Adams Central showed they can compete in tight games. As the season unfolds, these early results will shape the rankings and set the stage for a thrilling spring.
