The South Dakota State women’s soccer team has been nothing short of dominant in the early weeks of the season. After demolishing their first two opponents by a staggering 17-0 aggregate, the Jackrabbits faced a much sterner test Thursday night at home against Washington State. The Cougars, a program with a history of competitive play, came to Brookings for the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The challenge, however, did not rattle the Jacks.

From the opening whistle, SDSU showed composure and attacking intent. In the 13th minute, forward Mia Bosch stepped up to take a penalty kick and buried it with precision, giving the home side an early 1-0 lead. The goal settled any nerves and set the tone for the rest of the half. The Jackrabbits continued to press, and their persistence paid off again in the 31st minute. Midfielder Lauren Ekerle unleashed a powerful strike from distance that sailed into the back of the net, doubling the lead to 2-0. The Cougars struggled to find rhythm against SDSU’s organized defense, managing few clear-cut chances.

The second half was a tighter affair. Washington State adjusted its tactics, pushing forward in search of a goal, but the Jackrabbit backline remained resolute. Goalkeeper and defensive unit held firm, absorbing pressure without conceding. As the clock ticked down, the Cougars grew increasingly desperate, committing numbers forward. That gamble backfired in the 87th minute when Diezha Lyn Jacinto found space behind the defense, broke away on a counterattack, and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to make it 3-0. The goal effectively ended any hopes of a Washington State comeback.

With the victory, SDSU improved to 3-0 on the season, outscoring opponents by a combined 20-0. Head coach Brock Thompson praised his team’s discipline and ability to adapt against a quality opponent. The Jackrabbits have now won all three games by shutout, showcasing both offensive firepower and defensive solidity. Next up is a Sunday afternoon road trip to face Kansas State, which will be another test of their early-season momentum. The team will look to extend their unbeaten run and continue building chemistry as conference play approaches.
