Chicago police arrested a man and a woman Friday evening after the stolen vehicle they were traveling in crashed into an SUV on the city's North Side, bringing a tense chase to a sudden halt. The incident unfolded around 5:18 p.m. in the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive, a major lakeside artery that sees heavy traffic, especially during the evening rush hour. According to authorities, officers in a marked squad car attempted to stop a white sedan that had been reported stolen. The driver refused to comply, sparking a brief pursuit that lasted only moments before police deployed a tire deflation device, successfully puncturing one of the sedan's rear tires. Despite the deflation, the sedan continued northbound, its driver ignoring a red traffic signal at the intersection with a cross street. The stolen vehicle then slammed into a green SUV that was traveling through the intersection, causing significant damage to both cars. The force of the collision sent debris scattering across the road, temporarily shutting down parts of Lake Shore Drive and creating a chaotic scene for other motorists. The driver of the sedan, a 35-year-old man, and his passenger, a 23-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries. Paramedics treated them at the scene before transporting them to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where they were listed in fair condition. The occupants of the SUV – a 40-year-old woman and a 4-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the back seat – also suffered minor injuries. The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, while the child was transported to Lurie Children's Hospital, both in fair condition. Police took both suspects into custody at the scene without further incident. The Chicago Police Department has not yet released the names of those involved, and charges are pending as detectives from Area 3 continue their investigation. The incident highlights the dangers of police pursuits in urban areas, where fleeing suspects often disregard traffic signals and endanger innocent bystanders. The use of tire deflation devices, commonly known as stop sticks, is a standard tactic to disable fleeing vehicles without a high-speed chase, but it does not always guarantee a safe resolution. In this case, the device successfully punctured a tire, but the driver continued, leading to the collision. The area where the crash occurred is near the Magnificent Mile and tourist hotspots, but luckily no pedestrians were injured. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are expected to update the public on charges as soon as they are filed. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with stolen vehicle operations and the importance of swift police response to prevent further harm.
