Taylor, who became a billionaire after Voyager went public on the NYSE last year at a $3.8 billion valuation, told Fortune exclusively that humans will be living and working on the moon within the next decade. “The next step would be the moon. That’ll happen in the 2030s—probably early 2030s,” he said. “We’ll have a moon base, people living and working on the moon. You’ll be able to look up at the moon and see lights on the moon.”
He points out that a small number of humans already work in space at the International Space Station, which has been continuously occupied for 26 years. The industry, he says, is actively working to scale that up from a handful of trained astronauts to the general population. As for what jobs will exist, Taylor highlights resource mining, orbital data centers, and power grid construction. He believes humanoid robots, like Tesla’s Optimus, cannot fully replace human problem-solving. “You’re not going to be able to program Optimus to do everything on the moon,” he added. “You’re going to have to have humans to figure it out.”
Taylor’s journey into space is deeply personal. Despite building a fortune before age 30 across electronics, finance, banking, and real estate, he started over at 37 to pursue a childhood dream of working in space. In 2007, he became an angel investor in Space Adventures, later an early investor in Relativity Space alongside Mark Cuban. In 2017, he founded Space For Humanity, a nonprofit that buys seats on commercial spaceflights for underrepresented individuals. Two years later, he launched Voyager, which now holds multiple NASA contracts and is building the replacement for the International Space Station. Taylor himself flew to space on a Blue Origin flight in 2021, becoming the 606th human to do so.
Mars, however, is a different story. “Just because it’s so much further away. Radiation is so much more of a bigger problem,” Taylor explained. He doesn’t see Mars becoming a home for most people unless a major catastrophe strikes Earth. “I agree with Elon that we want to have some diversification, in case something really bad happens here—an asteroid or something like that,” he said. “The moon really isn’t sufficient diversification. The moon and the Earth are really the same planetary system.”
Who goes to Mars, Taylor believes, will come down to personal desire. “A lot of people don’t want to live on Mars,” he said, adding that he himself would take the adventure. “We’re all on a one-way trip, whether we know it or not. It’s just where you want to end up.” He thinks enough people share his “adventurer gene” to form a small colony, but building an entire civilization or terraforming would take a long time.
Taylor’s predictions align with those of other billionaires. Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has pushed for Mars missions as soon as 2028, though his past timelines have slipped. Bezos, founder of Blue Origin, predicted at Italian Tech Week 2025 that by 2045, “millions of people” will live in space, with robots commuting to the moon. Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said college graduates within a decade will have jobs in space that are “completely new, exciting, super well-paid” and that his generation’s early careers will look “boring” by comparison.
